Gettig Back into Vics
12/08/08 at 10:26am

I guess it's official...I've gone over the edge and gotten back into Victorian Basin cichlids!  Just what I need-a bunch of bunny rabbit fish to fill my tanks  Cheesy

Here's what I have to work with right now:

"Haplochromis" sp. 44
Enterochromis sp. "Blue Obliquidens"- 3-4"
Xystichromis phytophagus aka Christmas Fulu- 1.5-2+"
"Halpochromis" sp. Dayglow
"Haplochromis" sp. Kenya Golds
Xystichromis sp. "Kyoga Flameback"
Paralabidochromis chromogynos
Pundamilia neyerei Ruti Island
Lipochromis parvidens "Red"
"Haplichromis" sp. Ugunda Red

I also have a few more species on the way in the next 4-8 weeks.

You have that many vics?  I would not have guessed that.  I will invite Greg Steeves to join this board, and maybe he can comeo up with some species to bring in January.

That's the "off the top of my head" list, but I think I remembered everyone.

Have you ever known me to keep just one of a group of fish?  The collector collects!  Some of them won't have the normal extended stay in my fishroom and there are also a few I want to pick up that I've had in the past and really enjoyed.

To stay on the Topic, Aqua,

I have long been interested/intriqued by Vics, where would one get the best information on them? The old worlds that had really caught my eyes was the Westies tho...

Funny.....really?   Shocked  Why?  Does it make more sense if they typed out a completely different message?  Not to me it doesn't.  Work smarter...not harder I say.

Now back to our regularly scheduled topic.  Jeff,  you can expect a PM soon.  I find myslef liking the "other" africans the most. Well,  second to my fronts that is.

any tricks or tips for the 44's to spawn?
have had mine for about a year and a half now without sucess, have had them in their own tank and then even added other groups to encourage them so to say with no luck, not sure if I need a different ratio or what

any ideas I may have missed?

Kegger,

The standard battery of questions:

How many fish do you have?

What's the sex ratio?

What size are they?

What size tanks have you had them in?

What other fish have you kept with them?

Thanks Greg.  Ted normally brings the speakers by to my place before the meetings so I'm sure we will get a chance to talk.  But I need to know what do you want for dinner Friday night when you are here?  And more importatly what do you want to drink?

Several of the fish I have came indirectly from you after a brief stop in Iowa.  Some of the others I look forward to your input regaurding quality/purity of the strain.  (Although many of the fish I have are just youngsters right now and not showing a whole lot more then body shape and nice shades of grey)

Pull out the extra males.  I've found that when there are a lot of males in a breeding tank that the males spend more time fighting with each other and over territory then they do attracting the ladies.  This seems to be true of many of the non-pair forming mouthbrooders.  The trade off of one male and several females is of course the risk of the lone male being to assertive to the point of killing the females.

My favorite small group set-up for Victorians are groups of 2 males and 4 females.  This gives the dominate male a subdominate male to kick around (and sometimes kill) but doesn't distract his attention to much from getting the business at hand done.  This ratio also gives you the option of spliting the group into 2 trios if need be and assures that there is a back-up male if something were to happen to the dominate male (that is of course unless the dominate male has arleady killed the subdominate male!)

I've also found that younger Vics tend to be more prolific-not in terms of the number of fry per spawn but in terms of actual spawning.
